The Calatrava Ref. 3520 is indeed a milestone in Patek Philippe’s design history. By introducing the Clous de Paris hobnail bezel in 1973, it added a distinctive texture that contrasted beautifully with the otherwise minimalist dial. That bezel became so iconic that it has been reinterpreted in later Calatrava references, cementing its place as a design signature. Its ultrathin case and two hand layout reflect the Bauhaus principle of “form follows function,” stripping away any excess to highlight pure timekeeping. In many ways, the 3520 bridges tradition and modernity retaining the Calatrava’s understated elegance while adding a subtle flourish that elevated the collection’s identity.
