The diamond 4Cs for fine jewelry
A concise guide to carat weight, color, clarity and cut when reading a diamond jewelry description.

Carat weight
Carat measures diamond weight, not visible size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can have different face-up dimensions because of their shape and proportions. For jewelry containing several diamonds, confirm whether a stated weight is for one stone or the total combined weight.
Color and clarity
GIA's D-to-Z scale describes the absence of color in diamonds within that grading range. Clarity considers internal characteristics and surface features observed under defined grading conditions. Report only grades supported by documentation for the individual stone or piece.
Cut and shape
Cut grade evaluates how proportions and craftsmanship affect the appearance of a standard round brilliant diamond. Shape describes the outline, such as round, oval or emerald cut. Do not treat a shape name as a cut grade.

Consider setting metal, measurements, gemstone details, condition, photographs and any accompanying laboratory report together. Ask for clarification when a grade, treatment or document is not explicitly listed.
